You’ve been on the road for a long time, and you finally find a place offering sanctum for you. You enter a bus which serves as the entrance to this safe haven, but it turns out that the inhabitants have turned into cannibals, and have lured you into their trap. Based off the Season 4 and 5 Terminus storyline from The Walking Dead.
In 2017, the park opened The Walking Dead: Sanctum, an outdoor scare maze which was based off the same story line. The maze was located behind The Swarm, and felt more like a scare zone than a maze, and wasn’t as well-received as the park hoped. For 2018, the park moved the maze to Lost City, and made use of shipping containers to create indoor sections too.
Though the maze was primarily outdoors, this helped create an uneasy atmosphere, where you were never sure where you were going next. The maze was densely packed, meaning you would hear what was happening in other parts of the maze, further adding to the tension.
Even though the maze was focused on the cannibal storyline, the story also featured a breach into the sanctum, meaning that Walkers were present in parts of the maze too. This created an intense, varied experience, although at times it felt a bit overpacked and unclear what was going on. In the 2018 version of the maze, it even featured a mid-maze chainsaw run, which meant the rest of the maze struggled to build off that momentum.
Do or Die was met with mixed reactions during its 2 year run. The outdoor sections were sparsely themed, and the flow and consistency of the maze was rarely perfected. However, it was a strong maze for its time, and had the park’s Fright Nights partnership with AMC continued, it could have developed into a real highlight attraction!
