Take a walk down the woods, but be warned, this won’t be a simple stroll. The route might start off open and clear, but it quickly becomes filled with dense and overgrown trees, and you might find yourself going in circles. And even if you do make it out, there’s an abandoned cabin to contend with…but is it quite as abandoned as you think?

Blair Witch at Thorpe Park has a rich history at Thorpe Park. In 2013, as part of the Lionsgate takeover, the park transformed the Canada Creek / Old Town area of the park into Burkittsville, the town from the original Blair Witch Project film. This was the first time that the area had a Fright Nights attraction based there.

At the time of opening, the park advertised the Blair Witch Project as a scare zone, and it would only open at 6pm (or dusk), as opposed to the rest of the Fright Nights attractions at 3pm. The park still batched people in groups into the attraction, but they were much larger groups (between 20-30, as opposed to 12). However, the attraction was popular and attracted a long queue before opening. From 2014, the park advertised it as an outdoor scare maze.

The original Blair Witch Project attraction ran from 2013-2016. It started in Canada Creek at the old Canada Creek Railway train station (where Hyperia’s station now is). The route went along the back of the park to just behind Nemesis Inferno’s station. The maze started off very open, with some trees and very little actors. However, as you went on, the route became narrower – with many more trees and shrubs – and a few more actors.

The ending of the attraction was in a shed, styled to be the abandoned house from the film that the Blair Witch would take its victims too. This was enclosed, loud and chaotic, giving a memorable finale.

After taking a break in 2017 season, Blair Witch returned from 2018-2019, loosely based off the new Blair Witch film. This time, it started in the compound opposite Ghost Train. This meant the physical maze space was cut in half, but the core idea of the maze remained the same. To fit in with the story of the film, the maze started off with groups going round in literal circles – repeating part of the maze again and again – until an actor let you out. The maze also operated in the daytime.

In both incarnations, actors in the core part of the maze varied from lost travellers to crazed and desperate people who were scared of the Blair Witch.

The introduction of Blair Witch helped inspire the park be even more creative with maze ideas, and bought a wave of outdoor attractions as a result. Blair Witch also served as a good starter attraction for those who were more nervous about scare attractions, and helped vary the line up each year it was a part of the park.
