When it opened, Thunder River was one of the largest investments the park had every made. The ride was rethemed in 2002 to Rumba Rapids, and there are only very small differences between the ride then and the ride now.

The boats only seated 6 people, as opposed to 8, and were all coloured a dark yellow. There was also some water squirters dotted around the course, and not just at the end.
